We were asked to look at this project to see if we could give the customer a polished concrete floor for the new offices, canteen and meeting rooms they were having built.
It was an existing building that was having the internals modernised.
The floor was an old concrete floor which had quite a lot of damage and utility trenches that needed filling.
Using our three-phase HTC RX8, we aggressively ground the concrete to remove the adhesive and levelling compounds and continued to grind until we had a fairly even exposure of aggregate.
While this was being done, the trenches were cleared out primed and filled with a polishable repair compound and left to cure before being ground also to make it flush with the rest of the floor.
Some areas of the floor were very badly damaged, and it took quite a lot of grout and repair compound to get the floor to something like.
It was explained to the customer, that although we would get a polished concrete finish, it would obviously not look like a brand new floor. Luckily the customer was looking for a rustic looking floor and so they were more than happy to proceed.
Existing joints in the floor slab were cut out and refilled with grey jointing compound once the floor had been prepared. The jointing compound was then polished with the rest of the floor so that it would blend in.
After the floor had been ground to an acceptable level of aggregate exposure, we then used our HTC 650 and HTC Fenix pads to polish the floor through several stages right the way up to 3000 grit.
We moved to the smaller machine as we found some of the bathrooms were inaccessible for the larger grinder.
During the process, the floor was densified to harden it and improve the gloss finish.
Edges were ground using hand grinders and then polished using our HTC edging machine.
Once everything had been polished we applied two coats of sealer, burnishing the floor after each coat to bring out the reflection on the floor.
