Beauty Salon Shop Flooring Birmingham Case STUDY

Overview

Our customer had asked us to design a hardwearing, easy-to-clean floor for the Beauty Salon they were opening in Birmingham.

We recommended an ‘epoxy microtopping’, which would be very hardwearing and have very good stain resistance – as they would be using hair dyes and makeup products. Epoxy microtopping flooring is easy to clean and have good slip resistance.

Preparation

The floor had previously had a leveling compound applied along with adhesive for carpet tiles which we had to remove using our small 110v grinder.

After removing all the existing products, the floor was well cleaned, the cracks were repaired using epoxy crack repair, and then an epoxy primer was applied with quartz scatter.

Repairs

The existing floor was an old sand and cement screed which had a number of cracks that needed to be filled and repaired.

We cut out the cracks to clear them of debris and widen them so that we could repair them with an epoxy crack repair, which was then allowed to cure overnight.

Levelling Compound

As the floor was somewhat uneven, we applied a levelling compound between 5-10mm over the floor to give a nice flat, even surface to work from.

Epoxy Microtopping

After allowing the levelling compound to dry for a couple of days to make sure all moisture had been allowed to escape from the floor, we sanded the floor and applied a primer which again was left to cure overnight.

The next day, we hand-trowelled the first coat of the microtopping down and left it to cure. The step between the two floors was also coated to blend into the floor (we advised the customer that it would need an edge trim to protect the edge of the step).

Once cured the base coat was sanded and a second coat applied, again left to cure before sanding and applying the top coloured coat.

This was again left overnight and then sanded, we applied two sealer coats to the floor with curing between each coat.
